kainis!

(The characters are fictitious, hokay?)

I’m so kilig! As in so much! You know kasi, I’ve been introduced this guy, Sebastian, last year pa. It was summer and it was so boring that I asked a friend to give me a new crush. And she gave me Basti.

We clicked at once. We made kulit at least once a day on the phone. Before long, we were flirting while maintaining a platonic relationship. No, really!

And kulit he is to the max!

"O? Why you not texting me today? Siguro you don’t have load ‘no?" And I wanted to say "yes", but I couldn’t, kasi nga I didn’t have any load at all. So, I dunno, he probably couldn’t take it so he called me that day.
"You can’t get out and buy load for yourself?"
"Yah…"
"Sige na nga. I’ll buy load na for you. Pero after I cool myself off. It’s hot outside, even in my SUV."
"WOW! Why you acting like a concerned boyfriend? You don’t have to do that, you know?"
"… e… e, I always do that to my pamangkin naman e, so it shouldn’t be any trouble at all."
"Ah, so I’m like a pamangkin pala to you?"
"Hindi… like a girlfriend."
"Gosh!.. So this means that when I don’t have load anymore, we’re break na, di ba?"
"Ha ha! Yer funny!"

After a week, I was quiet again.
And he was quiet a week after that.

"Sweetie, why you not texting again? You don’t have load na naman, ‘no?"
How could I answer him naman? Hello!

Buti naman he caught up with the logic and called me up at home.
"Honey? Are you there? How’s my ex?"
"Hmp!" Y’know, the sort of hmp when you’re making mega-pa-cute in a sweetie-sweetie manner.
"O, what did I do wrong?"
"E you didn’t text me for a week! Siguro kaya mo ko na-remember kasi horny ka ngayon. Kasi you only text me when you’re horny."
"No, I’m not horny. I got laid the other night."
"Really? (aliw!) So who is it this month? Is it your college buddy Jill again?"
"No. Just some girl. Ano? You forgot na that you’re making tampo na with me, ‘no?"
"You e…"
"I don’t remember you naman when I’m horny. Tulad now. You don’t make me horny."
"And that’s supposed to be a good thing?"
"Ano ka ba? You’re so gulo!"

We were quiet again for 2 weeks. I texted him one night, but he replied the next morning.
"Hi sweetie! I was in Davao. Just got back last night. How are you?"
Before I could answer, Basti called.
"Where you right now?"
I answered in my super husky, still-plastered-on-bed kind of voice, "In bed."
"Wow! You got laid!"
"No, I did not!!" Which is sorta true. "I'm just pagod. Did you miss me?"
"Ya of course, I did. Pero you didn’t miss me. Hmp.Kasi you got laid last night!"
He’s good.
"So when am I gonna get my pasalubong? Di mo pa nga pala binibigay yung chocolates na na-promise mo sa akin last Valentine’s Day pa…"
"Why not tonight?"

And next thing I know, we were in Starbucks at 11pm, talking, laughing, and smoking like we were a chain of belching tambuchos stuck in downtown Manila. Later, he took me dancing. Ang sarap pala ng may nakayakap, ‘no?
As I was preparing for bed, he called again. We were doing this "O-ha" thing, where he says "ha" the same sabay time I say "O", and vice-versa. We were laughing so hard that my pantog sorta gave a little.
"Yer funny!"
"No, yer funny!"

on mars and xena

I first received an email on the spectacular feat that Mars would be showing the planet Earth sometime mid-July. It said there that Mars would be "as large as the full moon", and would be best seen "toward the end of August." It even boldly specified it would be on August 27. That immediately got me thinking: What was that we saw 2 years ago, on August 2003? Mars was so prominent then that they claimed it to be the closest to Earth in next sumthin'-sumthin' years.

My immediate response: Googled it. And sure enough, the last report on Mars being as big as our moon was August 27, 2003. No official reports of it for this year.

I never passed that e-mail around. But the same email kept finding its way back in my inbox, even today, August 30, when the event was supposed to have been over for 2 or 3 days!

No, even at its closest this October, Mars will remain at a safe distance of 42.9 million miles and will appear as a brilliant red "star" in the evening sky.

With all the email and the talks going round about Mars, I couldn't believe no one even mentioned about Xena, the newly discovered 10th planet. I had the idea of posting it here some 42 minutes after Google News released the report early this month, but Mars allegedly as big as the moon will steal the show. ahehehe.... whaddyaknow.

The 10th planet, which hasn't been officially named yet, was found by Dr. Michael Brown and colleagues of the California Institute of Technology. It is currently about 97 times farther from the sun than Earth, or 97 Astronomical Units (AU). Pluto is 40 AU from the sun.

Its temporary name is 2003 UB313, but has been fondly christened as
Xena after the warrior princess of the television series because, according to Brown, "we always wanted to name something Xena."

Xena's discovery renewed a
debate over what exactly is a planet and whether Pluto should keep its status. Xena is reportedly bigger than Pluto, and if Pluto was discovered today, it would not have been classified as a planet.

So
what makes a planet?

According to nature.com, The International Astronomical Union (IAU) oversees the naming of stars and asteroids. However, it has no criteria for defining planets. An IAU committee has been working on the issue for around a year and had planned to publish its results next summer. Brown's discovery has made the debate more urgent.

Pluto and 2003 UB313, both rocky worlds that lie beyond the gas giants, fall into a controversial group. When discovered in 1930, Pluto was thought to exist alone. Astronomers now know it lies in the Kuiper Belt, a jumble of rocky and icy objects that rings the Sun. New objects are continually discovered in the belt. And several Kuiper Belt objects are a similar size to Pluto - 2003 UB313 is thought to be larger. If Pluto is a defined as a planet, then around ten other Kuiper Belt objects should presumably also qualify.

But many astronomers object to this, and argue that Kuiper Belt objects should have a separate status.

Thus, we're looking at a possibility of Pluto not being a planet afterall.

And whether or not 2003 UB313 officially becomes planet Xena, the warrior princess among the Roman gods and goddesses in the sky, it's yet to be seen.

Tandaan nyo yan. Lalabas yan sa Game Ka Na Ba?, Wowowee or Laban o Bawi.

gatecrash weekend

for our own security, i won't reveal what parties we went to.

there were 2 parties over early this month that required a fee. trixie and i decided to gate crash, and if successful, it will be posted here.

so now you know how that turned out to be.

but why gate crash?

both parties required registration fees (i know: it's that kind of party). cheapskates? not really. just practical.

party #1 had us a bit doubtful of the crowd. we wanted to see our contemporaries and P400 was not worth it if trix and i would be sharing a table alone.

where party #1 had us hoping we'd see people we know, party #2 had us hoping we'd see people we like. P500 wasn't worth it if you'd stay for <1hr.>and we got our non-existent money's worth. we saw no one of interest to us there.

but we got to bring home balloons.

ever after

speaking of last song syndrome, i have a new one, but it's the good kind.

ever after.

you can listen in and have a piece of my disorder. just don't download whatever it is that they want downloaded. it might slow things down for you.

the anton ramos remix is cool, too, but there aren't any mp3's for download available. at least not right now. besides, i'd rather buy original filipino CD's.

ever after
by bonnie bailey

Three years ago, our journey began
Chasing down this cure, no plan in hand
Just your pulse, my racing guide in the dark
Just knowing with conviction from the start

The moment your eyes made an introduction
I felt my second violent breath of life
Flawless to the point of being godly
Yet I fell hard for your imperfections

And now we're slightly weathered, we're slightly worn
Our hands grip together, eye to eye through the storm, yet
I still believe in ever after with you, yeahhhhh
Cuz life is a pleasure with you by my side,
And there ain't no current in this river we can't ride
I still believe in ever after with you

Nothing compares to the good times
Feels like we're floating, when the rest have to climb
You made me believe in love, and not the perfect kind
A real messy beautiful twisted sunshine

Emotions, volcanic eruptions
We both still care, so we're still alive
Tunnel vision, determination
I want you, I want to make it right

And now we're slightly weathered, we're slightly worn
Our hands grip together, eye to eye through the storm, yet
I still believe in ever after with you, yeahhhhh
Cuz life is a pleasure with you by my side,
And there ain't no current in this river we can't ride
I still believe in ever after with you

You are my twisted sunshine
You are my twisted sunshine

devilman

while i can't be with my movie buddies, i have found solace with my dvd buddies.

AKA: Debiruman

Director(s): Hiroyuki Nasu
Released: 2004
DVD Released:02/24/05
Country: Japan
Action/Adventure, Science Fiction

DVD buddies: Agot and Sugar

I'm not a big Anime fan, but I do find it interesting. Agot and Sugar - they're big fans.

This is a live-action version of the Devilman OVA (original video anime) and manga series in Japan. It follows the story of scrawny high school best friends Akira and Ryo, both becoming demons with the accidental release of some supernatural beings from the antarctic. The virus somehow becomes pandemic, turning normal people into demons and causing chaos among society. It becomes the Devilman's mission to put an end to this madness.

And because we don't like it, I'm gonna tell you more about the movie.

Akira, as the Devilman, eventually has to fight side-by-side with, and later against Ryo, who turns out to be the reincarnation of Satan. Yin-Yang. However, with the alarming number of "infected" humans becoming demons, an anti-demon squad was formed to quarantine them. Normal people become paranoid, hence, causing amok. The irony was humans ended up killing humans which was Satan's plan coming into fruition. He only had to sit back and relax.

The sub-plots and some scenes didn't make sense.

For instance, in the midst of war, Akira and his love interest, Mikki, go to church. You would think they would pray for world peace. But - no. Mikki prays how she would want to marry him and have "many children with you" What the -?

And then this sub-plot where a good teenage demon, Mikho, and her newfound like-a-little-brother friend, Susumo (yeah, we know) run around the city to evade the anti-demon squad. When the world was obliterated, they were the only ones who survived for some reason only the director and writers know. The rest was predictable: they were the only ones left, so it was up Mikho to wait for Susumo to mature so they can populate the new world.

Ryo, the incarnation of Satan - it was so predictable that Agot, Sugar, and I made that remake simultaneously. And nonchalantly.

And what of Akira and Ryo? They have a (brief) final showdown. Good prevailed. Predictable.

The story wasn't our biggest problem. It was the acting. While the CGI was impressive (hmm... overall), the acting was appalling. Daig pa sila ni Gollum.

The first part of the movie was fast-paced, however, as the story progressed, I found myself almost dozing off a couple of times. I was only roused with cool CGI scenes.

It was Sugar who bluntly said, "Ang pangit naman ng DVD na hiniram mo, kuya!"

As a consolation, the actors were mostly teenage pop idols in Japan, which got Agot sarcastically remarking in his most macho voice, "Pare, am pogi, pare!"

tom cruise's spaghetti carbonara

trix and i always cook something different every year on our birthdays. this time, we thought of searching for a new carbonara recipe. something vegetarian. instead, she found this: tom cruise's spaghetti carbonara. we just made a vegetarian version.

INGREDIENTS
1/2 inch of olive oil (for frying pan)
2 cloves of minced garlic
1 chopped onion
8-12 thick slices of Italian bacon
4 eggs
2 packages of spaghetti
2 cups grated parmesan cheese

In a frying pan, combine 1/2 inch of olive oil, 2 cloves of minced garlic, one chopped onion and the Italian bacon cut into small squares. Let simmer for about a half-hour, being careful not to let the oil get to a boiling point.

In a bowl, beat 4 eggs with lots of salt and fresh ground pepper.

Bring a pan of salted water to a boil. Cook both packages of spaghetti until al dente, drain and immediately add egg mixture to pasta. The eggs are actually cooked by the pasta. (Make sure the eggs are thoroughly cooked before proceeding.) Stir the egg mixture until it is well mixed. Pour in the mixture from the frying pan and stir. Finish with the parmesan cheese and serve!

what i used here is the strip generator. you create your own comic strips by dragging the characters, bubbles, and objects. then, you can save your work in the gallery, and/or send it to anyone. this strip is just my 2nd attempt:

not calvin and hobbes

cool? strip away!

the hazards of commuting

for some time now, i'm am getting familiar with those novelty songs from all the commute i've had.

the worst part about hearing these songs is having a last song syndrome (LSS). to add insult to injury: the most annoying lyrics are those you get to memorize quickest.

the spaghetti song had ear-splitting vocals to boot. aww!

kiliti. wag dyan. may kiliti ako dyan. wag dyan.

itsumo kokoro we hoshi itsuka. dare katu mata koi nei utchitimo. itsumo kokoro kokoro nei eiro itsumo. anata dake no basho go aru kara.

(you gotta admit: after some time it gets amusing to actually memorize it. kinda like circa 70's/80's when you were trying to sing the theme to voltes v - or angelina circa 90's - and have become desperate enough to invent your own lines.)

the worst LSS i've had in the last few months: ang charing charing kong sumayaw. parang chubibo gumalaw. ang charing kong sumayaw, bibong-bibo gumalaw. that, with the recurring image of blackdyak (?) gyrating to the song.
ok ba?

today, though, is different. no LSS today. jologs lang. i fell asleep in the van i was riding, and woke up learning that the jocks in the station were conducting a survery: "sa palagay mo, mas maraming a) pangit o b) maganda sa pilipinas?"

i have no idea what the final results were. suffice to say that the pangits have it by the time i stepped out of the van.

charing.

no buko, no pie

to those rockstar: inxs fans, you know by now that ty got the encore for no woman, no cry. it was pretty obvious yesterday, as he was the only one who received a standing ovation from the band.

sadly, brandon didn't rake in the buko.

no buko, no pie.

Said - said - said: I remember when-a we used to sit
In the government yard in trenchtown.
And then georgie would make the fire lights,
As it was logwood burnin’ through the nights.
Then we would cook cornmeal porridge,
Of which I’ll share with you;
My feet is my only carriage,
So I’ve got to push on through.
But while I’m gone, I mean:
Everything’s gonna be all right!
Everything’s gonna be all right!
Everything’s gonna be all right!
Everything’s gonna be all right!
I said, everything’s gonna be all right-a!
Everything’s gonna be all right!
Everything’s gonna be all right, now!
Everything’s gonna be all right!

So, woman, no cry;
No - no, woman - woman, no cry.
Woman, little sister, don’t shed no tears;
No, buko, no pie.

-from Bob Marley's No Woman, No Cry

(we sang it as no buko, no pie in college. i couldn't get it off my head after ty sang this piece. hence, i placed it in my blog for no reason. last song syndrome. sigh!)

stitch the bitch and other stories from a disney movie-inspired dorm

this blog fell on aug 4, 2005

i went back to la salle dasma this week. i had planned to spend the night there and my first stop was to see my brods and sisses.

rizzah, ghil, jhayel, and liezl met me at umc. we started the usual "rounds" of finding my contemporaries and other brods/sisses on duty. dr cosico, the e.r. consultant was there. we took him out of post for a while. saw a couple others on the way there, but when we ran out, we went straight to the frat house where we chilled with a lot others for a while.

the last time i saw these peeps was two years ago. i haven't really spent a lot of time with them then because these were not my contemporaries, but it didn't matter. it felt to me like they were. afterall, they are my brothers and sisters.

later, we decided to crash
jopy's place in SH.

student homes, or SH, was my home back in med school. it's an enclosed compound of studio type apartments. by general opinion, the place is spooky because of its magestic acacia trees, its quiet neighborhood, and the unnerving sensation that some supernatural being will jump up from anywhere when you expect it or least expect it. that, or some creepy, crawly creature that will terrify the bejesus outta you cause you might be face-to-face with your doom. the rooms, by opinion, are relatively low-tech especially since the studio type apartments in villa nicasia are newer. however, for those who have adapted to the SH lifestyle, the place is cool. the neighborhood is quiet and very conducive for study... or whatever hits your fancy. gossip is down low. nobody really cares in SH, hence, no one talks behind your back. we could understand why some people find it spooky - mostly, those who aren't used to having trees would say that. the best part about SH is this: the rooms are the largest ones around the campus area. my room can accomodate a bed, couch, tv, computer, & a dining table. i had my own kitchen, bathroom and i still have extra space for another small table.

that, and the fact that you live amongst national geographic magazine material.

this was where tonight's adventure began.

***
as soon as we entered jopy's place, stitch, the
boston terrier bitch greeted us. i was so fascinated that she did look like stitch!.. sorta. the hyperactive dog immediately displayed her proficiency with spelling. i watched somewhere that animals get their cues from their master's body language. but it was still kinda clever when jopy asked stitch to spell "ivy." the bitch wasted no time barking twice. oo nga naman: I-V.

jopy did this with the other sisses' names: rizzah and jhayel. she even made her count to 10.

***
later, i got my usual 3am overseas call from
rumer. i went outside for privacy. i was chilling in this one area in SH under a lamp post; sat at a stone ledge when i noticed that a humongous spider was right beside me. jeez.

***
rumer was puzzled with the response. i told him what happened. he was so concerned that he advised i go back in. i declined. i said i was ok anyway and that i was now standing up in the middle of the road.

only now, there were two cats joining me.

***
the SH cats are always entertaining. my friend, agot, had classified the cats into groups according to personality. there was (group A) who fought among others at the sight of food. (group B) sat in a larger circle behind this group, waiting for scraps. and then, there was the alpha male that was likened to...(!!) this cat didn't seem intimidating the least bit, but agot said he noticed that whenever this cat strut in, whatever the others were doing, "talsik silang lahat!"

and so, one night, agot and i were doing our tambay time outside his room when we were privileged to witness the arrival of the alpha male. the other cats were in the middle of the dirt road in front of agot's room when they first got a glimpse of the alpha's shadow. the other cats immediately leapt to the windows of the aparments and kept a huge distance from him.

that was probably the highlight of our evening. cheap thrill.

in fairness, the alpha male looked regal.

***
and then there was this group of cats who lived creek side in SH. phase 2, or creek side, was a different neighborhood altogether when it came to our furry friends. the cats here are those (in sis mina's words) "trying hard maging pet." these were the cats who played cute to eat. these cats loved to rub its head on your leg while you're walking because it thinks it looks so ridiculously cute.

unfortunately for them, you think it's uber-annoying and hazardous.

***
while i was talking to rumer that night, two cats came up to me, trying hard to look cuter than they are. (ah! creekside cats!) one of them was slithering in between my legs, and the other one was lying down and did his cute routine. whaddyaknow. i was in the presence of nermal - times two.

i walked away from these cats. who knows where they've been in.

sadly, they just followed me up the road, criss-crossing between my legs. i unintentionally stepped on one of their tails. you'd think they'd bite me or scratch me, but - no. they continued being cute.

hindi sila desperate.

***
in fact, they were now trying to "talk" to me. like they wanted to be a part of my conversation with rumer. by this time, rumer was hearing them "meow." i don't know what came over him, but he thought i was being cute and doing it, until i placed the cell in the cat's face. it's weird - the cat seemed like it knows how to talk on the phone because it started meowing, and looked like a little kid talking to santa on the phone when you take the phone away from him - y'know - when the kid shouts what he wants and follows the phone wherever it went.

now if i only understood what he told rumer.

it was then i heard a rustle among the trees. i saw two pairs of eyes that glowed in the dark.

***
when i first came to SH back when i was a freshman in medical school, i thought the place was reminiscent of a disney movie. it was that day when i walked back home from school and i was admiring the flowers and the butterflies that stretched from the gate all the way in. then, as i turned left on the road, i saw a deer.
we were both startled. the deer never thought i'd be there. like i was in my unnatural habitat.
i thought i was supposed to be the only one thinking that.

since then, i've gotten used to these docile creatures run, roam, and leap in the most graceful manner. it was as though it was straight from a national geographic channel or an animal planet documentary.

or from the movie
bambi.

it's a different story at night, though.

***
it was the usual reaction that these deers greeted me the other night- motionless with their startled eyes intent on you. i think i caught them doing something.

it made me wonder: is it deer mating season? i forget when.

***
back then, we either get a few laughs or sleepless nights during their mating season.

if one doe wasn't enough, imagine this: i discovered that these creatures come out in the open and graze the field on sundays when there aren't too many students around. it's like a deer picnic: there were some on the ground, the young playing, some "teens" (??) running around and leaping in front of you, and some combative males with entangled antlers. i counted 40.

that was one sunday some 6 years ago, i think.

imagine how mating season was for us.

***
i slept at 5am. went back home to LB some 12hrs later.
***
in case you were wondering, there were horses in SH when i was a freshman. i don't know where they went.

stackopolis

stackopolis: "the most addictive game since tetris!"

(at least that's what the site said)
