stitch the bitch and other stories from a disney movie-inspired dorm

i went back to la salle dasma this week. i had planned to spend the night there and my first stop was to see my brods and sisses.
rizzah, ghil, jhayel, and liezl met me at umc. we started the usual "rounds" of finding my contemporaries and other brods/sisses on duty. dr cosico, the e.r. consultant was there. we took him out of post for a while. saw a couple others on the way there, but when we ran out, we went straight to the frat house where we chilled with a lot others for a while.
the last time i saw these peeps was two years ago. i haven't really spent a lot of time with them then because these were not my contemporaries, but it didn't matter. it felt to me like they were. afterall, they are my brothers and sisters.
later, we decided to crash jopy's place in SH.
student homes, or SH, was my home back in med school. it's an enclosed compound of studio type apartments. by general opinion, the place is spooky because of its magestic acacia trees, its quiet neighborhood, and the unnerving sensation that some supernatural being will jump up from anywhere when you expect it or least expect it. that, or some creepy, crawly creature that will terrify the bejesus outta you cause you might be face-to-face with your doom. the rooms, by opinion, are relatively low-tech especially since the studio type apartments in villa nicasia are newer. however, for those who have adapted to the SH lifestyle, the place is cool. the neighborhood is quiet and very conducive for study... or whatever hits your fancy. gossip is down low. nobody really cares in SH, hence, no one talks behind your back. we could understand why some people find it spooky - mostly, those who aren't used to having trees would say that. the best part about SH is this: the rooms are the largest ones around the campus area. my room can accomodate a bed, couch, tv, computer, & a dining table. i had my own kitchen, bathroom and i still have extra space for another small table.
that, and the fact that you live amongst national geographic magazine material.
this was where tonight's adventure began.
***
as soon as we entered jopy's place, stitch, the boston terrier bitch greeted us. i was so fascinated that she did look like stitch!.. sorta. the hyperactive dog immediately displayed her proficiency with spelling. i watched somewhere that animals get their cues from their master's body language. but it was still kinda clever when jopy asked stitch to spell "ivy." the bitch wasted no time barking twice. oo nga naman: I-V.
jopy did this with the other sisses' names: rizzah and jhayel. she even made her count to 10.

later, i got my usual 3am overseas call from rumer. i went outside for privacy. i was chilling in this one area in SH under a lamp post; sat at a stone ledge when i noticed that a humongous spider was right beside me. jeez.
***
rumer was puzzled with the response. i told him what happened. he was so concerned that he advised i go back in. i declined. i said i was ok anyway and that i was now standing up in the middle of the road.
only now, there were two cats joining me.
***
the SH cats are always entertaining. my friend, agot, had classified the cats into groups according to personality. there was (group A) who fought among others at the sight of food. (group B) sat in a larger circle behind this group, waiting for scraps. and then, there was the alpha male that was likened to...(!!) this cat didn't seem intimidating the least bit, but agot said he noticed that whenever this cat strut in, whatever the others were doing, "talsik silang lahat!"
and so, one night, agot and i were doing our tambay time outside his room when we were privileged to witness the arrival of the alpha male. the other cats were in the middle of the dirt road in front of agot's room when they first got a glimpse of the alpha's shadow. the other cats immediately leapt to the windows of the aparments and kept a huge distance from him.
that was probably the highlight of our evening. cheap thrill.
in fairness, the alpha male looked regal.
***
and then there was this group of cats who lived creek side in SH. phase 2, or creek side, was a different neighborhood altogether when it came to our furry friends. the cats here are those (in sis mina's words) "trying hard maging pet." these were the cats who played cute to eat. these cats loved to rub its head on your leg while you're walking because it thinks it looks so ridiculously cute.
unfortunately for them, you think it's uber-annoying and hazardous.
***
while i was talking to rumer that night, two cats came up to me, trying hard to look cuter than they are. (ah! creekside cats!) one of them was slithering in between my legs, and the other one was lying down and did his cute routine. whaddyaknow. i was in the presence of nermal - times two.
i walked away from these cats. who knows where they've been in.
sadly, they just followed me up the road, criss-crossing between my legs. i unintentionally stepped on one of their tails. you'd think they'd bite me or scratch me, but - no. they continued being cute.
hindi sila desperate.
***
in fact, they were now trying to "talk" to me. like they wanted to be a part of my conversation with rumer. by this time, rumer was hearing them "meow." i don't know what came over him, but he thought i was being cute and doing it, until i placed the cell in the cat's face. it's weird - the cat seemed like it knows how to talk on the phone because it started meowing, and looked like a little kid talking to santa on the phone when you take the phone away from him - y'know - when the kid shouts what he wants and follows the phone wherever it went.
now if i only understood what he told rumer.
it was then i heard a rustle among the trees. i saw two pairs of eyes that glowed in the dark.
***
when i first came to SH back when i was a freshman in medical school, i thought the place was reminiscent of a disney movie. it was that day when i walked back home from school and i was admiring the flowers and the butterflies that stretched from the gate all the way in. then, as i turned left on the road, i saw a deer.
we were both startled. the deer never thought i'd be there. like i was in my unnatural habitat.
i thought i was supposed to be the only one thinking that.
since then, i've gotten used to these docile creatures run, roam, and leap in the most graceful manner. it was as though it was straight from a national geographic channel or an animal planet documentary.
or from the movie bambi.
it's a different story at night, though.
***
it was the usual reaction that these deers greeted me the other night- motionless with their startled eyes intent on you. i think i caught them doing something.
it made me wonder: is it deer mating season? i forget when.
***
back then, we either get a few laughs or sleepless nights during their mating season.
if one doe wasn't enough, imagine this: i discovered that these creatures come out in the open and graze the field on sundays when there aren't too many students around. it's like a deer picnic: there were some on the ground, the young playing, some "teens" (??) running around and leaping in front of you, and some combative males with entangled antlers. i counted 40.
that was one sunday some 6 years ago, i think.
imagine how mating season was for us.
***
i slept at 5am. went back home to LB some 12hrs later.

in case you were wondering, there were horses in SH when i was a freshman. i don't know where they went.
